Fairtrade

What is Fairtrade?

Fair Trade is an organised social movement which promotes standards for international labour, environmentalism, and social policy in areas related to production of Fairtrade labeled and unlabelled goods. The movement focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries.

Under the banner of the Fairtrade Labeling Organisations International (FLO), national Fairtrade organisations support the interests of the farm workers. An important part of this initiative is directed towards improving working conditions. Fairtrade however goes one step further, actively assisting local communities through the appointed Joint Bodies who manage the disbursement of Fairtrade premiums. The Joint Bodies are comprised of delegates of the farm management, the trade unions and the workers themselves.

For every single flower, a fixed premium is paid directly to the Joint Body. On each certified farm a joint committee of workers, management and Unions determines how these funds are used in the best interest of the community. Projects are wide-ranging including purchasing bicycles for the workers, furnishing crèches and kindergartens and subsidising replanting programs. We are proud of the many projects to which Omniflora and our committed customers have contributed.
